Patong
The most central and vibrant area on the island. Here you will find the main beach, most of the restaurants and shops, and most of Phuket's nightlife.

Karon
South of Patong, on a long beach with white sand. Lively enough that there is something to do in the evening, calm enough to sleep.
Kata
The continuation of the strip southwards, with a quieter, more family atmosphere. A beach that also suits surfing and snorkelling.
Kamala
North of Patong, a calm beach bay with hotels overlooking it. Less traffic and less of a strip than in the centre.
Surin
A smaller, more upmarket beach area in the north-west of the island, with no entertainment centre of its own. Suits couples looking for quiet.
Bang Tao and Laguna
A long stretch of beach in the north-west, home to large resorts with plenty of space. The choice for anyone who wants the hotel itself to be part of the holiday.
Mai Khao
The northern part of the west coast, the least built-up of all the island's areas. A long, open beach with very little around it.
Nai Harn
A bay at the southern tip of Phuket, one of the quietest on the island. A more local atmosphere, and no tourist strip.
Rawai
At the southern tip, on the eastern side. Less a swimming beach and more a residential and fishing area, with restaurants facing the sea.
Chalong
A bay in the south-east of the island used as a departure point for cruises, not an area you come to for the beach.

Cape Panwa
A cape in the south-east of the island, few hotels and a lot of quiet. Not a through area — you come here on purpose.
Phuket Town and the Old City
The centre of the island and not a beach. The Old Town preserved its Sino-Portuguese architecture from the tin trading era, and Phuket's markets are here too.
