Check availability and priceand why this is a completely different landscape from Phuket
Khao Sok is A national park on the mainland, about two and a half hours' drive from Phuket. Instead of beaches and boats: Dense rainforest and vertical limestone cliffs that rise from within it.
The forest here is older than the Amazon. It has existed continuously for about 160 million years, and survived the ice age that dried up other forests in the region. In its area live about5% of the world's species.
The heart of the park is Cheow Lan Lake, an artificial lake created in the eighties when a dam flooded an entire valley, and the cliffs that stood in the valley remained standing. This is the landscape known as "Thailand's Guilin."
Anchored on the lake are Floating bungalows, wooden and bamboo houses tied onto barrels, with no road and no signal.
Around there is also A river for canoeing, waterfalls, caves, and trekking trails, and a small village with boutique hotels and pools.

About two and a half hours from Phuket. This is a trip off the island, so it's a full day.
and what you get in each one
Day trip It takes you out of Phuket in the early morning, gives you a boat ride on the lake among the cliffs, a stop at the Guilin viewpoint and the coral cave, a meal, and brings you back the same evening. That's enough to see the scenery.
and what it doesn't give: the morning safari. The fog that sits on the water between the cliffs happens before sunrise, while those coming for a day trip are still on the road. This is the part that almost everyone who stays overnight there mentions as staying in their memory.
Lodging on the lake adds this, and more: an evening safari at the time when the animals come down to drink, a forest trek, and time to swim and kayak without a schedule.
And there is also A night in the forest itself, in a boutique hotel in the village, with canoeing on the river and waterfalls, for those who want Khao Sok without staying on the water.
and those who have two full days, Three days of jungle and lake give the place its two faces.
and from where it's cheaper
From Phuket, about two and a half hours' drive, and this is the starting point for most travelers. All the prices on our pages are calculated from there.
From Khao Lak, the drive is much shorter, and the price drops significantly. Those already planning the south anyway: A night in Khao Lak before Khao Sok saves both money and four hours of driving.
From Krabi, similar to Khao Lak in distance and price.
and from Surat Thani and the gulf islands, Samui, Phangan, and Koh Tao, there's a cheap shared transfer. Those finishing at the islands and wanting Khao Sok on the way back pay less than everyone.
Write to us how many you are and where you're departing from, and we'll get back to you with your price, transportation is priced per vehicle, so a group pays less per person.
and why the rainy season here isn't what it seems
Khao Sok is open all year, and unlike the Similan Islands, it doesn't have a closed season.
December to April: The dry season. Comfortable trails, a calm lake, and also the busy season.
May to November: The rainy season, and it's actually the beautiful part here: The forest is fully green, the waterfalls are flowing, the fog on the lake is thicker in the mornings, and there are fewer people.
The rain in the forest comes in Short bursts and not for a whole day, and most activities continue through it.
Worth it in any season Closed walking shoes To trek, and A thin raincoat, the weather in the forest changes within minutes.
and what are the real chances of seeing animals
Khao Sok is described as a place inhabited by wild elephants, tigers, sun bears, and tapirs, and all of these are indeed there. But it needs to be said honestly: The chance of seeing them is close to zero. The forest is dense, the animals stay away from people, and the area is vast.
What you do see, and in most visits: Langurs and gibbons in the treetops, troops of macaques, large hornbills in the morning hours, and monitor lizards on the lake's shores.
and timing matters more than luck. The evening safari before sunset and the morning safari before sunrise are the hours when the animals come down to the water. At midday, the forest is almost completely quiet.
In the forest itself, what stands out The rafflesia, the world's largest flower, whose diameter reaches about 80 cm. It blooms for only a few days, mainly between January and March, and only a local guide knows if there's a bloom that week.
And alongside them Giant trees with buttress roots, ferns, orchids, and land leeches after rain, these aren't dangerous, just unpleasant. High socks solve it.

and why it doesn't need to be a single day
The common mistake is to cram Khao Sok into a single day from Phuket and back. It's possible, and it's also five hours of driving for one day.
The combination that works: Khao Lak and then Khao Sok. Khao Lak is a quiet beach town two hours north of Phuket, and from there the drive to Khao Sok is short. Two nights in Khao Lak and a night in Khao Sok make a full week without unnecessary travel.
or on the way north. Those continuing from Phuket to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao pass through Surat Thani anyway, and Khao Sok sits exactly on this route. You can stop there for a night on the way, instead of driving straight through.
and this is also the cheapest: Getting there from Surat Thani is by shared transfer, and it's much cheaper than a private transfer from Phuket.
Those coming from Krabi, the drive is similar to that from Khao Lak, and it's also short from Phuket.
