Anyone who understands this in advance builds the days correctly: one full day at sea, and a second, slower day on the island itself.

Cruising between the islands

The main format in the area is a cruise that passes several points in a row: bays, reefs and snorkelling stops, and returns before sunset.

Our trip in the area covers seven destinations in one day, and that is the efficient way to see the full range of the area without organising every stop separately.

Snorkel

The water around the islands is shallow and clear at some spots, and snorkelling there needs no experience. It is the activity most people remember from the day.

Maya Bay: before you plan

Maya Bay is the famous beach of the area, but it is not always available: it has closed and reopened intermittently in recent years, and the number of visitors is limited. We have written about this separately on the site.

So it is not worth building a whole day around it alone: it is better to choose a trip that covers several points, so it does not stand or fall on one beach.

Viewpoints on the island

On Koh Phi Phi Don there are viewpoints that look over the two bays forming the island's familiar shape. The climb is short but steep, and the view from there is what you see on most postcards from the area.

This is one of the few land activities on the island, and it is also the way to understand its geography: a narrow strip of sand connecting two mountainous parts, on which everything there is sits.

How to build the day

The sea trips in the area leave in the morning and return before sunset, so they take up the whole day. Planning something else after them is usually too optimistic.

Anyone on the island for two or three days can divide it up: a full day at sea, a short day on land with a viewpoint and a beach, and a third day for nearby snorkelling or simply rest.

What to take

Everything that goes into the boat needs to survive water: a waterproof bag for the phone and documents, sunscreen, a shirt for swimming and water shoes.

The sun on the water is stronger than on the beach, and a hat and shirt make the difference between a good day and a day that ends with sunburn.
