What the day looks like, in order

from hotel pickup to return

The hotel pickup is in the early morning hours, and the drive to the rafting area in Phang Nga takes about an hour and a half each way. The drive itself is beautiful, you leave Phuket heading north, cross the bridge to the mainland and enter a completely different, mountainous and green area.

The first stop is Suwan Kuha Temple, better known as the Monkey Cave. You stop there for about twenty minutes, and that's enough to go into the cave, see the Buddha statues inside it and meet the macaques that live outside.

From there you continue to the rafting base. There you receive Helmet, life vest and a short safety briefing, and are divided into boats of six to eight participants with a guide in each boat.

The five kilometers on the river They are the core of the day, and last about an hour to an hour and a half depending on the water level. After them comes the 150-meter Omega, and the waterfall, where you can go into the water.

Lunch is served at the base, and it Halal. After it, those who chose a program with ATVs or elephants do it, and that's what extends the day.

Return to the hotel is usually Between 16:00 and 17:00, and in the extended programs, later.

The four programs: what's the real difference

and the base is the same in all of them

This is the most important thing to understand before choosing: the four programs are not four different tours. The base, rafting, Omega, Monkey Cave, waterfall and meal, is located in each one of them, and what changes is only what's added afterward.

Program S It is the base only. It's the cheapest and shortest, and for most people it's exactly what they wanted, the rafting is the main point anyway.

Plan A adds elephant riding. Plan B adds ATVs. Plan C adds both of them.

and therefore the choice isn't "how much to spend" but How much time do you want to be outside. Every addition extends the day, and on the fullest day you return to the hotel late and tired.

The ATVs They run on a dirt trail in the area, and they are dirty and noisy, that's part of the fun. The elephants they are a short round inside the camp next to the base.

The basics

5 km rafting, 150-meter Omega, Monkey Cave, waterfall and meal, in all four programs.

Plan A

The base plus elephant riding. A short round at the camp next to the rafting base.

Plan B

The base plus ATVs on a dirt trail. The most requested program after S.

Plan C

The base, ATVs and elephants. The longest of the four days.

The rafting itself

Difficulty level, safety and what really happens on the water

The river in Phang Nga is A mountain river of medium difficulty, and not an extreme route. It has rough sections with rapids and whirlpools, and it has completely calm sections where you simply drift with the current.

No prior experience is needed. In every boat sits a guide who navigates and gives simple instructions, when to paddle and when to hold onto the boat, and most participants are rafting for the first time.

There is no requirement to know how to swim. Life vest and helmet are mandatory for every participant throughout the entire route, and the briefing is given before entering the water.

You will get completely wet. It's not a matter of luck or skill, water gets into the boat all the way. Anything you don't want wet should stay in the minivan.

The water level changes the experience. In the rainy season the river is fuller and faster and the route is rougher; in the dry season it is calm and slow, and sometimes you need to push the boat in shallow sections.

Mandatory equipment

Helmet and life vest for every participant, and a skilled guide in every boat. The briefing is before entering the water.

You will get wet

Water gets into the boat throughout the entire route. A swimsuit under your clothes and a change of clothes in the minivan.

Phone and wallet

You leave in the minivan. There is no dry spot in the boat, and a sealed bag is no guarantee.

Shoes

Shoes that can get wet and won't slip off your feet. Flip-flops disappear in the water.

The Suwan Kuha Monkey Cave

The stop most people don't expect

Wat Suwan Kuha It is a temple built inside a natural rock cave, and it is an active site and not an attraction built for tourists. Inside it there are several Buddha statues, and the largest of them is a reclining Buddha several meters long.

The cave itself is cool and dim, and the light coming in through the openings in the rock is what makes it a photogenic place. The stay there is short: About twenty minutes, and enough to pass through it and leave.

lives outside A troop of macaques, and they are the reason for the name that stuck to the place. They are completely used to people, and that's exactly the problem.

Don't feed them and don't hold open bags. The monkeys here snatch glasses, bottles, bags and food, and they are fast. The only method that works is not holding anything in your hand.

This is an active temple, so you enter with covered shoulders and knees and without shoes inside the inner hall.

Pickup, areas and schedule

and who pays extra

The transfer is included in the price and it Round trip from the hotel, in the pickup areas defined by the operator: Bang Tao, Cherng Talay, Surin, Kamala, Kalim, Patong (including Tri Trang and the beachfront), Kathu, Phuket Town, Kata and Karon.

a hotel outside these areas, there is an extra charge. It is not uniform between the programs, so we confirm the exact amount for you according to the hotel address before you book, and we don't publish a number that might be incorrect for you.

The exact pickup time is given after booking confirmation, and it is determined by the hotel's location and the minivan's route that day.

Booking closes at least 24 hours in advance. This is not a tour you can join the same morning.

The tour departs Every day except monsoon days. When the operator cancels because of the weather, the refund is full.

When to travel

The season changes the river

May to October it is the rainy season on the Andaman coast, and it is actually The good season for rafting: The river is full, the current is strong and the route is rougher and more fun. It's also the time when the surrounding jungle is fully green.

November to April drier. The river is calm, the route is comfortable for families with young children, and in the especially dry months, February and March, the water level may be low.

The weather in Phang Nga is not the same as the one on the Phuket coast. It rains in the mountain area even on days when the coast is dry, and vice versa, so a rainy day at the hotel is not a reason to assume the tour is canceled.

In every season the day starts early. Those who arrive a day earlier on a night flight will find it difficult, because the pickup is before the hour most people wake up on vacation.

Who this suits, And for whom less so

Honestly

This suits For those who want an active day in nature and not a day at the beach, for families with children aged 4 and up, and for those looking for something that isn't just another boat to another island.

Less suitable For those looking for a calm day. This is a long day with three hours of travel, and it is wet, dirty and busy.

and for those with back or neck problems: The rafting is bumpy. It's worth consulting beforehand, and considering the base instead of the extended programs.

For children The rest of the day, the monkeys, the waterfall and the elephants, is usually more fascinating than the rafting itself, and the rafting scares some of them in the rough sections. It still works, but it's worth knowing in advance.

Those who want the same area without the rafting, The James Bond islands tour goes out to the same Phang Nga Bay from the water, and it's a completely quiet day.
