This is an island of long beaches, longtail boats and sunsets, and that is roughly the daily routine of most people who are there.

What the island is like

The beaches stretch along the west coast in a chain, so it is easy to choose between a livelier area and an almost completely quiet one — sometimes only a few minutes' drive apart.

The local boats, the longtails, are both a means of transport and part of the scenery. A sea trip from Koh Lanta usually sets out in a boat like this.

Who this suits

For couples and families who want a relaxed destination, and for anyone who has already done Phuket and is looking for the same area in a quieter version.

Less suitable for anyone looking for nightlife, shows or shopping: the island is not built around that.

How to fit it into the route

Koh Lanta belongs to the Krabi area, so it combines naturally with Krabi and the islands around it. A common combination is a few days in the Krabi area and then moving to Lanta for the relaxed part of the trip.

What you do on a normal day

Most days on Koh Lanta look alike, and that is the point. The beach in the morning, a meal, moving to another beach in the afternoon, and the sunset: the island faces west, so it is part of the day and not a bonus.

Anyone who wants to break the rhythm goes out for a day at sea: a longtail boat trip to the small islands around, snorkelling, or a fishing day with local fishermen.

What is worth knowing in advance

The further south you go along the island, the fewer restaurant and shop options there are. That is exactly what draws people there — but it is worth choosing the hotel area with that in mind and not in hindsight.

The island is long, and getting from one end to the other is not a walk. If you are planning to move between beaches, it is worth arranging it in advance and not assuming you will find a solution on the spot.

What to take into account in the season

Some businesses on the island work only in season and close in the rainy months. In the southern areas this is more noticeable than in the north of the island.

If you are travelling out of season, it is worth checking in advance that the hotel and services you are relying on are actually open on those dates.
