What there is in Koh Tao
The island is built around a row of small bays, each with its own character: some of them noisier and some almost empty. The distances between them are short, and you can move between them in a single day.
Right beside Koh Tao sits Koh Nang Yuan: a group of small islets joined by a sand bar, and one of the best-known snorkelling spots in the area. Our trip to Koh Tao combines both on the same day.
Who this island suits
For divers and snorkellers, of course. But also for couples looking for a slow pace, and for travellers willing to give up malls and shows in exchange for clear sea and a bay you can walk to.
Less suitable for a family trip based on water parks and air-conditioned attractions, and for anyone who wants big nightlife: for that there are other pages on the site.
How to fit it into the route
Koh Tao almost never stands alone. Most routes combine it with Koh Samui or with Koh Phangan, which are in the same gulf and connected to it by boat.
The common combination: a few days on a larger island with hotels and restaurants, and from there a trip out to Koh Tao — either as a full day, or as a two- or three-night stay for divers.
What is worth taking into account
Getting to Koh Tao is by boat, so it is worth planning the day around that and not sticking to too tight a schedule on the day you arrive and the day you leave.
If you are planning to dive: it is worth leaving a free day after the last dive before flying. This is an accepted safety recommendation at every dive site in the world, not a local rule.
