The airport is inside the city, and the interesting destinations are outside it

Chiang Mai airport sits inside the city itself, a few minutes from the Old City surrounded by its wall and moat. That sounds convenient, and that is exactly why people arrive without planning a transfer — and then discover that most of what they came for is actually outside the city: the elephant sanctuaries in Mae Rim, Doi Suthep on the mountain, the craft workshops in San Kamphaeng, and from there also the trips to Chiang Rai and Pai.

A transfer arranged in advance solves both ends: the driver waits with your name at the airport, and he is also the one who will take you to the destinations with no convenient transport.

Where you are going

The Old City and Nimman

The Old City inside the wall and moat, and beside it the Nimmanhaemin neighbourhood — the cafés, galleries and young hotels. Both are a few minutes from the airport.

Doi Suthep

The temple on the mountain above the city. The road winds, and the ride is much more comfortable in a private vehicle than in a shared songthaew.

Mae Rim and Hang Dong

The area of the elephant sanctuaries, farms and resorts outside the city. There is no regular public transport there.

San Kamphaeng

The craft villages — silk, sa paper, silverware and umbrellas — east of the city.

Chiang Rai

The White Temple and the Golden Triangle, to the north. A long drive that is comfortable to do in a private vehicle with stops.

Pai

The mountain village in the north-west, along a road winding through the mountains. Anyone who suffers from motion sickness should know in advance.

A group, an extended family, or a long ride to Chiang Rai with gear.

Before you book

Please note

  • The road to Pai winds the whole way. Anyone sensitive to travel sickness is better off going in the morning, and sitting in front.
  • Doi Suthep has opening hours, and it is worth arranging the pick-up time accordingly and not only by your own convenience.
  • A safety seat for a baby or child — please specify when booking in advance.
  • In the smog season in the north, usually in March and April, visibility in the mountains changes from day to day.
Frequently asked questions

What to know before you book

How long does it take from Chiang Mai airport to the Old City?
The airport is inside the city, and the drive to the Old City is short. That is one of the reasons Chiang Mai is especially convenient to arrive in.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
per vehicle. There is no surcharge by number of passengers or luggage, as long as you are within the vehicle's capacity.
Can you book a driver for a full day, not just a transfer?
Yes. For Doi Suthep, Mae Rim or San Kamphaeng it is usually the most comfortable option — a driver who waits for you between stops.
What about a trip to Chiang Rai or Pai?
Both are long rides that we arrange in a private vehicle. The road to Pai winds all the way, and it is worth setting out in the morning.
What happens if the flight is late?
The driver tracks the flight number and waits. There is no extra charge for a delay.
How much is the transfer?
The prices for all destinations appear in the price table on this page. The final price is set by the date and the number of participants — send us a message and we will get back to you with availability and an updated price.
